Who wants God anyway?
What’s the first word that comes to mind when I say, “God?” It bothers me how many will say, “sin,” “judgment,” or, worse yet, “irrelevant.” What happened to the way we teach God? Even more important, what happened to human sensibility toward God, our own ability to sense God’s movement in our own lives?
Do you know you are another Moses? Do you know you have the power to walk on water (metaphorically)? We have been blinded, dulled, and misinformed about the dynamism that is inherent in a relationship with God! Bushes still burn! Storms are still calmed with just a word! And, yes, we can all walk on water!
Literalism has done a great disservice to faith. Through teaching that Moses saw a literal bush burning and Jesus literally walked on top of the water, we have missed the application: God empowers us to see possibility, opportunity, and our ability to transcend the storms that rage in our lives!
Which would you rather have — a God who will permit you to see a solitary supra-natural event like a single bush burning without being consumed; or, would you choose to have a state of mind that is not dampened by trial, a state of mind that sees above, and a hope with heft enough to stand up to the worst of difficulties?
Reflection
How did our view of God get so dimmed?
Prayer
Oh, God, I don’t know you! I feel so separated from the you that talked to Moses, the you that spoke to Mary, the you that wrestled with Jacob. I want to talk to you! I want to see you! I want to wrestle with you. Is this thinking too much of myself; or, are we all meant to be as active with you, as receptive to you as were Moses, Mary, and Jacob?
