Between God and you…

What sits between you and God?

Do you think God would be more interested in you if you went to church? If you knew a little bit about the bible? If you didn’t use bad words; if you didn’t have sex before marriage; if you weren’t gay; or, even, if you were thinner?

It is amazing how many steps we can put between ourselves and God because of the baggage we project onto God. Our own parent treated us this way, so we assume God will do the same. Pastor Jeff thought this, so we assume God thinks that too. Even unconsciously, we can put thoughts and judgments into God’s mind that God would never assume.

If you were hiding in a corner at a very large gathering, God would come and find you. It wouldn’t be your faults, your habits, your words, or your behavior he would address. His very presence would work to bring to the surface just what it was that caused you to be in the corner in the first place, and this would be the topic of conversation — the core reason that keeps you from Him. And in those first few seconds, you would realize just how lacking in substance this reason ever was.

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39)

Reflection

What do you project upon God that keeps you at a distance from Him?

Prayer

Dear God, I don’t like You for this reason or that. I don’t like the view of me I think You have! I don’t understand why You supposedly hate this behavior or those people or that particular belief. Help me to identify and step around all these projections. Help me to just come before You — as You are and as I am and begin there.
